During sleep, the neck and throat muscles relax narrowing the upper airway. This narrowing can cause two types of problems:
  • snoring: the relaxed tissues vibrations caused by the flow of air breathed in; (fig.1);
  • Sleep apnea: arrest of breath caused by the obstruction of the airways due to the relaxation of the muscles of the pharyngeal area. (fig. 2).
These respiratory dysfunctions can be treated with dental devices which keep the mandible in protrusion not allowing the relaxation of soft tissue in the pharyngeal level. (fig.3).
